Lost Phones and Cultural Enlightenment

Sounds like some crazy stuff is going down back in B Town. It's been a while since I've gotten my blog on, but there's not that much to update on from overseas. I guess the most ridiculous story from the past two weeks has to do with me allegedly pretending to be from Spain and that I didn't know any English while talking to some American girl named Hannah at a club. When I woke up in the morning, Dothage had a text from my phone, which Hannah had somehow obtained. Either she stole it, or I gave it to her; either option is equally possible. Anyway, I called her up (in English) and asked if I could get my phone back. She agreed, but when I called her to get it, she didn't answer... for four days. Maybe she was just pissed to find out that I was actually American, or maybe she's just crazy. Anyway, ZK and I are at a club one night, and we thought it was hilarious to go up to groups of girls and ask them if they like music (his idea). We go up to a random group and ask them how they feel about music, and it turns out that these girls are Hannah's roommates. They were also of the thinking that Hannah was kind of crazy and, in the end, one of her roommates returned my phone to me the next day, 4 days after it had disappeared. I can only imagine that between the whole only speaking Spanish thing and the whole "do you like music?" thing, these girls have to think that I'm clinically insane.

That's not all we did last weekend, though. We also went to a place called Bar Marselles. It's the oldest bar in Barcelona, and one that serves absinthe. Some of the people that used to frequent Bar Marselles included Earnest Hemingway, Antoni Gaudi, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso... which would explain a lot about cubism and the moderniste architecture movement. The absinthe tasted like liquified black licorice, which I found nasty, but Dothage loved. Also, it doesn't actually do anything and, contrary to what it seems like in Euro Trip, there is no talking green fairy. This was a cool spot, but my favorite part of last weekend could probably have been heavily influenced by the things that went on in Bar Marselles. I am talking about one of Gaudi's masterpieces, Parc Guell. Antoni Gaudi was an architect who was famous for the moderniste movement of architecture, wherein everything he designed looked like it came from a fairy tale or a hallucination. It was widely believed that Gaudi took a lot of drugs when designing buildings and parks, and one look at Google images will make you see why. The architecture at Parc Guell was unbelievable. But the thing that was best about it was the very top. Parc Guell is situated at the back end of Barcelona, on a mountain overlooking the city to the Mediterranean. At the very top of the park is a large stone cross that you can climb to and look out over the city. It was, without a doubt, the coolest place I've ever been. The view of the entire city was breathtaking. As soon as I can get an adapter to put my memory card in my comp, I'll put up pictures.

This weekend, our program had a study trip for all the students to a town called Tarrogonna, which was the ancient Roman capital of the Hispanic provinces. At one point in time, it was the second largest city in the world, behind only Rome itself. Now, it's pretty much a sleepy suburb of Barcelona. The weekend was really interesting, and pretty fun as well. We were each with our own Spanish class, so I wasn't with Dothage or ZK really until the evenings, but I have a solid Spanish class so it was fun. We saw a lot of medieval Gothic Cathedrals (awesome), some castles, some ancient Roman walls, an ancient amphitheater, a huge monastery, took a tour of the Torres Vineyards, etc. etc. It was a very informative and interesting weekend. It's just amazing that there are things still standing here that were built literally thousands of years ago. The history here is just incredible. So much has happened on this land over the years, it's hard to even imagine. Really puts into perspective how young America is (don't interpret that as a bad thing... USA is still, and forever will be, the greatest country on Earth. I tried to start a USA chant in the bar the other night, but it didn't catch on. I miss the frat.).

Hope all is well at school. Heard ATO got the boot, hopefully nothing bad happens to us. Vito, I'm looking forward to whatever ridiculous story you respond to this post with. Miss all you guys, and Dothage says "fuck all you hoes, get a grip".

Long live Drew Brees.

  1. Glad to hear you have become a historian ken. Thinking about switching your major anytime soon? But this week was filled with Kilroys, followed by more Kilroys, followed by yet.... some more Kilroys. Of course Tuesday after class we hit it up hard. We went for dinner with a solid crew got stamped and headed back for some relaxation before going out at night. Only thing was there was very little relaxation. We returned to a black out Thayer Hood. This didnt work so well with a nearly blacked out Aaron. Thayer busted Aarons, door Aaron was faking getting back at Thayer and a little scruffle came about. Miraculously, Aaron somehow kept drinking with me and Morse and we made it back to Roys. It was a very wise decision considering it was us 3 and about 15 pi phis. Always good when you are outnumbered by a sorority 5 to 1.
Thursday we headed back to Bears and then to roys after that. We were chanting the whole B bus ride there(I dont really remember that because of my inability to eat dinner and then go to bears for 2 hairy bears).Ended up seeing everyone you could imagine at the Bar Thursday night and it was Phi Psi juniors everywhere. Nothing you can complain about. We are hangin with 3rd street more and got a packed rush week with Open parties, XO, Pi Phi, and Alpha Phi i believe. Should be fun.

Friday was a chill day getting hammered at the crib and partying in Frasers room haha. Actually wasnt to bad of a night. Saturday things started to get out of hand. With the seniors gone at their formal and most of the sophs heading out of town the house was left to our class. Started the day out with edward 40 hands and moved on to Roys at 7. Stayed there til close and had to take a cab due to p-cats being in Canada. A car load of guys went to miami of ohio so we had to pull a prank. We postit noted thayers room covering all his walls and then hung lamby from the ceiling. He didnt care about the postits but was pretty pissed about lamby. What a pussy.

Hopefully we will have some more eventful stories this week that wont cost me so much money. Going out everynight is becoming pretty expensive but oh well, you only live once. We'll try and rush some sweet Americans this week and make you proud Ken.IU plays Purdue this week in basketball and we will probly get out shit kicked in. We lost on a last second shot to U of I on Saturday. Thats about all i got for you from the Frat. Miss you all.

The Taus are gone but we'll party on. Peace and Love from the greatest university in the world. Stay classy Barcelona.

  3. I'm down to call you Steb, Steb. But i forgot a few things to add to my post earlier. First, which is pretty baller. The actual new house plans were revealed last night at chapter. This thing is unreal and will be getting done the summer after graduation. If i find a way to send you some pics or floor plans i will send those over, you might get an email about it or something also. I really dont know. But second, scott sack somehow seemed to get arrested again. Yes that means P.I. number 4. He was in jail for 36 hours and of course he was here drinking with simple before he got arrested. Should it surprise you? I think not. Lurch, Steb, and Klodge enjoy and be safe you three running around scares me.

  4. So we all know how amazing Vito is at talking about himself, but I figured I'd give it a shot too and give you an update about our roadtrip last weekend. Friday morning rolls around and of course I don't have class on Fridays (I'm not Yeoman who gets a hard on for the idea of attending class). As the day went on, it became clear that there wasn't going to be anything to do in Bloomington this weekend. Earlier in the week Manderson had made a comment about going to Miami of Ohio. I sent him a text around 3:00 suggesting that we leave town and head to Oxford. Within 15 minutes we had a 5 man crew together. Me, Mandy, Thayer, Kamin, and Boland. As you know, any true roadtrip has to be a last minute thing. We decided to stick around for dinner (chicken wraps and fries....hell ya). Immediately affter dinner we headed to the parking lot and you guessed it.....we 5-manned the Cougar. I of course got shotgun and Thayer of course got bitch. It only makes sense that way. After a 2 1/2 hour drive, we arrived in Oxford (which, believe it or not, is more in the middle of nowhere than Jasper). Immediately me and Mandy headed to the liquor store. Although we planned on returning with Seagrams, we ended up grabbing Seagram's ugly cousin, Old Crow Whiskey. Of course Boland and Kamin whined for 45 minutes about our selection, but they got over it. We ripped half of the bottle and then headed to someone else's house. The bottle was gone with 30 minutes of us opening it, so you know the night was going to end up well. After stealing a bottle of Vodka from the house we were at, all of us minus Boland decided it would be a good time to hit the bars. We were only at the first bar for about 20 minutes before heading to the next bar. On the way there, Mandy managed to almost get hit by a car. He also managed to get cut off from booze at the bars before 10:30 and was served a glass of water. Mandy's friends decided that it would be good to take him somewhere else, so that was the last we saw of Derson for the night (facebook pics confirm that he continued to have a good time though). It was then Me, Thayer, and Kamin. We decided it would be a good idea to check out Phi Psi. While everything from this point on is a little hazy, we do know that Thayer managed to leave the Phi Psi house with his share of stolen items(the normal flags and banners). While we don't realy remember a single detail from the rest of the night, we do know the following.....Kamin loves buying $10 Grey Goose shots, Thayer likes approaching girls at other colleges with the pick up line of 'Hey do you girls go here?', Boland loves highlighter parties full of bros, and we were at Phi Psi again till almost 5 AM (Heyen has a friend who is a Phi Psi at Miami and he told Heyen the next day that there were some guys from IU at his house who were being real faggots). We somehow ended the night at my buddies place and his roommate whom we had never met before decided that it would be cool to throw firecrakers at us while we were using his couches to sleep. The next day, we stuck around for a while to watch the IU game and then headed home. Boland and Thayer didn't have more than 50 cents left between the two of them. I don't know how ridiculous the night actually sounds in this, but I promise that it was epic. Our actions would have made you proud.
